Whether or not you choose to live in Green Hills, you’ll likely find yourself there at some point during your Nashville residency. This high-end area is encircled by several other popular neighborhoods, sharing a border with 12 South, Hillsboro, Berry Hill, Forest Hills, Belle Meade, and Sylvan Park. The heart of the neighborhood is the dense commercial district that runs the length of Hillsboro Pike and includes the Mall at Green Hills, a movie theatre, restaurants, and the city’s only Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s grocery stores. It’s also home to the famous Blue Bird Cafe, known for decades as the spot to hear Nashville’s best songwriters try out their new tunes before they hit the radio.
The quality and variety of shopping draws people from all over the city to the neighborhood, meaning that traffic can be frustrating, but if you’re lucky enough to live in the area, you’ll find yourself with a glut of shopping and dining choices that exceed even Downtown and Midtown.
Housing in Green Hills tends to be high-end but mindful of aesthetics and ranges from high-rise condos to mid-century brick cottages to manicured estates. With most homes located on side streets off the main thoroughfare, residential areas maintain a feeling of privacy despite their proximity to both the neighborhood’s commercial district and bustling Midtown. Many houses feature deep front yards and old growth trees. There are several public and private schools within the neighborhood including Lipscomb University which shares it’s campus with the associated PK-12 Lipscomb Academy.
Green Hills Park and Elmington Park - located behind JT Moor Middle School and West End Middle School respectively - offer jogging paths and athletics fields, but Green Hills residents seeking a more outdoorsy experience will find that they’re a short drive from the beautiful Radnor Lake State Park as well as some of the most picnic-worthy parks in surrounding neighborhoods such as Sevier and Fannie Mae Dees with it’s famous mosaic dragon.
Green Hills has been and continues to be one of the most desirable areas in the city. If you want easy access to amenities and shopping without sacrificing your living space - and you have the budget to make it happen - it’s worth giving these treelined streets a look. Just make sure to leave some extra time in your schedule to navigate that afternoon mall traffic!
